The 8th China Special Food Conference Wraps Up Successfully

From November 15th to 17th, 2023, the 8th China Special Foods Conference concluded successfully in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province. The conference was hosted by CNHFA and the Wenzhou Municipal People's Government, co-organized by Jiangnan University and Wenzhou Medical University, with support from the China Academy of Inspection and Quarantine. It was also contracted to the Management Committee of Wenzhou Ocean Economy Development Demonstration Zone of Zhejiang Province (Wenzhou Haijing District), Wenzhou Municipal Science & Technology Bureau, and Wenzhou Municipal Administration for Market Regulation. The event received support and assistance from numerous industry associations both domestically and internationally.


The conference was chaired by Bian Zhenjia, former Deputy Director of China's State Food and Drug Administration and President of CNHFA. Chen Wei, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of Jiangnan University, served as the academic chairman. Li Xiaokun, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of Wenzhou Medical University, held the position of academic chairman. Jiang Yujun, Vice President of CNHFA and Dean of the College of Food Science at Northeast Agricultural University, and Shi Hanping, Vice President of CNHFA and Professor at Beijing Shijitan Hospital affiliated with Capital Medical University, served as academic vice presidents. Xu Xiping, Executive Director of the Precision Nutrition Specialized Committee of CNHFA and Distinguished Professor at the Graduate School of Nutrition and Health Sciences of China Agricultural University, acted as the Academic Vice Chairman.

This year's congress attracted more than 1,800 participants from both domestic and international backgrounds. Distinguished attendees included Zhang Fenglou, former Vice Minister of the Ministry of Health; Ge Zhirong, former Deputy Director General of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine; Yang Zhiming, Special Researcher of the Counsellor's Office of the State Council and former Deputy Secretary of the Party Group of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security; Qu Fenghong, Deputy Secretary General of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Vice President of the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association; and Fang Ning, former Deputy Director of the Counsellor's Office of the State Council and Counsellor of the State Council. Additionally, eight academicians shared their insights, including Chen Wei, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Li Xiaokun, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Liao Wanqing, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Xie Mingyong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Xiao Wei, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Zhong Zhiqiang, Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK, and Honorary Professor of Shanghai Jiaotong University; Chen Zhengming, Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences and Chair Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Oxford; and Liu Dehui, Chief Scientist of Wenzhou Medical University. The conference also welcomed the presence of Liu Jinfeng, Director of the Food Safety Standard Monitoring and evaluation Department of the National Health Commission; Liu Songtao, Deputy Director of the Department of Special Food Safety Supervision and Management of the State Administration for Market Supervision and Administration; Gao Feng, Director of the Centre for Food evaluation of the State Administration for Market Regulation; Li Ning, Director of the National Centre for Food Safety Risk Assessment; Ding Gangqiang, Director of the Institute for Nutrition and Health at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention; and 50 other leaders representing various departments and offices of the National Health Commission and the General Administration for Market Regulation. Zhang Zhenfeng, Secretary of Wenzhou Municipal Party Committee; Wang Zhenyong, Vice Mayor of Wenzhou; Wu Zhengguo, Secretary of the Party Committee of Jiangnan University; and Lv Yijun, Secretary of the Party Committee of Wenzhou Medical University, attended the conference on behalf of the organizers. Nandakumara Sarma, Director of Dietary Supplements and Herbal Medicines at the United States Pharmacopeial Convention; Jonathan Chew, Chief Executive Officer of the Infant Nutrition Council; George Paraskevakos, Executive Director of the International Probiotics Association; Chris Gearheart, Director of Growth & Engagement at the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s; and numerous other representatives from international nutrition and health industry organizations attended the conference to share their research.


Heads of organizations from Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang, and more than 20 provinces and cities convened to discuss collaborative industry development. They participated in joint party-building activities, visited and surveyed local industries' development in Wenzhou, and explored opportunities for cooperation.


The event received coverage from various media outlets, including Xinhua, People's Daily, People.cn, China Economic Network, China.com, China Consumer Daily (Xiaofei Ribao), China Consumer Magazine, Guangming Daily, Economic Daily, Science and Technology Daily, The Paper (Pengpai Xinwen), China Food News, Food Safety Guide, CCTV, China Daily, China Business Times, Market Regulation News, Consumer Daily Exposure (Self-media), Shenzhen Business Daily, and other news media representatives. They reported on the event and conducted interviews with the presidents of different organizations and other activities.


During the 3-day conference, 3 general meetings, 8 sub-forums, 6 invitation-only symposiums, 2 regulations, and 2 research sessions were successfully conducted, totaling 21 activities. More than 100 industry experts delivered over 130 keynote speeches, providing the audience with a comprehensive industry knowledge experience.

Awarding Ceremony of "Special Food Industry Cluster Demonstration base"


To further emphasize the leadership of industrial clusters, CNHFA awarded the title of "CNHFA Special Food Industry Cluster Demonstration base" to the Management Committee of Wenzhou Ocean Economy Development Demonstration Zone in Zhejiang Province. The award was jointly unveiled by Zhang Fenglou, Zhang Zhenfeng, Bian Zhenjia, and Huang Yangxu.

In an effort to promote the clinical application of special food, CNHFA awarded the title of "Special Food Clinical Application Demonstration base" to several healthcare institutions, including the First Hospital Affiliated with Wenzhou Medical University, the Second Hospital Affiliated with Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou Central Hospital, Wenzhou People's Hospital, Wenzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Wenzhou Kangning Hospital.

The China Special Food Conference is positioned as a platform for exchange and cooperation, leading to the signing ceremony between the Wenzhou Municipal People's Government and six leading special food enterprises. The China Specialty Foods Conference is not just an industrial event but also an academic one, facilitating collaboration between industry, academia, and research through academic exchanges. The CNHFA Signs Memorandum of Cooperation with Four International Organisations


CNHFA signed Memoranda of Cooperation with four international organizations, namely the United States Pharmacopoeia Committee, Infant Nutrition Council, International Probiotics Association, and the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s. In the future, CNHFA will strengthen its cooperation with these international organizations, contributing to the global nutrition and health industry's prosperity.

Commissioning Ceremony of Wuxi Special Food and Nutrition Health Research Institute


The Wuxi Special Food and Nutrition Health Research Institute was officially commissioned during the conference. Distinguished individuals including Bian Zhenjia, former Deputy Director of China State Food and Drug Administration and President of CNHFA; Xie Mingyong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Li Ning, Director of the National Centre for Food Safety Risk Assessment; Zhang Shouwen, former Inspector and Executive Deputy Director of Heilongjiang Food and Drug Administration, Professor, and Doctoral Supervisor; Shi Hanping, Vice President of CNHFA and Professor at Beijing Shijitan Hospital affiliated with Capital Medical University; Jiang Yujun, Vice President of CNHFA and Dean of the College of Food Science at Northeast Agricultural University; Zhang Lishi, Professor at West China School of Public Health, Sichuan University; Xu Xueming, Executive Deputy Director of the National Functional Food Engineering and Technology Research Centre; and Li Yahui, Professor at the National Engineering Research Center for Functional Food of Jiangnan University, took to the stage to inaugurate the Institute.

Exhibition Area


The venue also featured an exhibition area where more than 10 vice-presidents and member organizations showcased the industry's new technologies and products, earning high praise from leaders and guests who visited the area. In future events, the organizers plan to provide an even larger exhibition platform and more opportunities for enterprises to exhibit their products and exchange ideas.


Throughout the conference, CNHFA Food Safety News Dissemination Committee (FSNDC) and Foods for Special Medical Purpose Sub-Committee (FSMPSC) successfully transitioned to their new terms.


Wang Cheng, Food Industry Director of China Economic Net, assumed the role of Chairman for the 2nd FSNDC. Guo Liang, Editor-in-Chief of Xinhua Food Channel; Yang Yuyun, Editor-in-Chief of China.com Food Channel; Zhao Xi, President and Editor-in-Chief of Consumer Daily; and Wang Ting, Executive Deputy Editor-in-Chief of China Consumers Magazine were elected as Vice-Chairpersons, while 12 representatives were elected as members.


Gu Xinxin, President of Nestle Health Science Greater China, was re-elected as the rotating chairman of the FSMPSC. Yang Xiaoguang, a researcher from the Nutrition and Health Institute of the State Center for Disease Control and Prevention, was appointed as the executive vice-chairman, and Liu Yunfeng from Nestle Health Science was appointed as the secretary-general. Over 30 members of the Sub-Committee participated in the general exchange meeting.

Prior to the Conference, the First National Academic Conference on Maternal and Infant Nutrition of 2023, jointly hosted by the Maternal and Infant Nutrition Committee of CNHFA in conjunction with Jiangsu Nutrition Society, Yancheng Municipal Science and Technology Association, Yancheng Municipal Health and Wellness Committee, and other units, was successfully held in Yancheng City on October 13th and 14th. This event paved the way for the Conference and its associated activities. Experts and scholars from across the country gathered to explore developmental directions, share cutting-edge results, expand academic thinking, and provide practical guidance on various branches of nutritional sciences through diverse activities such as academic lectures, exchanges, seminars, and continuing education and training. This practical promotion of the latest advances in nutritional science and research aims to offer better service for mothers and children and collaborate in opening a brighter future for maternal and child health.


With the successful conclusion of these recent conferences and activities, the 8th China Special Foods Conference and its associated events have reached a successful conclusion. These events have stimulated innovation and creativity within the industry, fostered domestic and international exchanges and cooperation, and have also accumulated valuable experience, providing a strong foundation for the smooth organization of future conferences. Let us look forward to the 9th China Special Foods Conference and its associated activities in 2024, anticipating that these events will continue to empower the industry with innovation and gather momentum for its continued development.
